Consider this post your ultimate guide to brown hues in fashion and interiors. Brown is considered a neutral color, making it easy to incorporate into your home or wardrobe.
Why are we wearing brown this season? Well, with so much emphasis on natural beauty and minimalist elegance in 2021, some designers and brands, like Aura, are embracing the understated look. Brown, in home decor, can add warmth to a room and pairs well with mint greens, blues, and caramel yellows.
Brown plays a similar role in fashion and interior design. In fact, brown tones in interior design can produce stunning minimal designs. Also, when well executed, different tones and textures of brown can create beautiful cohesive looks in your closet AND in your living room.
Which is your favorite neutral to wear? Black, navy, brown, cream? How about in your home decor?
I’m curious. Are they similar or different?

- Choose a brown velvet maxi dress for a stand-out holiday look
Examples of Brown Hues in Interiors
Are you a fan of brown but not sure which shade to include in your home decor? If so, your hesitancy is understandable. Using the wrong shade of brown may date your home back to the 1970s!
To avoid this mistake, here are a few examples of brown hues in modern interiors:
- Minimalist design (notice the pairing with a fresh, robin egg blue rug)
- Modern Cabin is often seen in the work of Kelly Cruz Interiors
- Brown design in accessorizing
Also, incorporate brown neutrals by adding statement artwork to a room. I used several different shades of brown and yellow in the acrylic painting featured above; Burnt Umber, Bronze Yellow, Raw Umber, and Naples Yellow.
I added mint blue and a subtle teal color which served as a nice balance to the warm tones of Burnt Umber.
I challenge you to try the same color combinations in your home or wardrobe! Let me know how it goes in the comments below.
