Patterns in art and fashion couldn’t be more similar. As a Charlotte Artist, I’m always on the lookout for buildings, surfaces and destinations in the the Queen City with inspiring design. I find joy in the parallel between a decorative wall and a dress pattern. Mind blown! This decorative mural is located in South End right outside of Lilbelle Clothing Boutique in Charlotte, NC.
One of the interesting concepts about art and fashion is how we relate to each. Is it possible that you would choose a piece of art for your home with large blocks of vibrant colors, yet, you would NEVER choose to wear that same pattern in your wardrobe?
OR
Perhaps you show more consistency. Maybe your home design is in line with your wardrobe choices. Take a second and think about what patterns, colors, and lines excite you. Do you see those same patterns anywhere in your closet?
Art and fashion for me, serve similar purposes. Take this lovely floral cocktail dress from Asos, for example. I wore this to a wedding and later, a garden party. The pattern of bright magentas made me feel uplifted and special. However, I couldn’t bring myself to wear the look every day.
So, what if this floral dress were a painting? Or wallpaper? Would I place it in my home? YES, but in a room that I wouldn’t frequent often, such as an accent wall in a guest bathroom. A pattern to admire, but visit on special occasions.
Patterns and Personalities
Hence, our Art and Fashion behavior can mimic our personalities. For example, I’m about fifty percent an introvert and fifty percent an extrovert. I actively seek environments with lots of stimulation; busy restaurants, crowded fairs, and live concerts. The more going on the better! However, if I fed myself that amount of stimulation daily, I would retreat into a deflated shell.
So, the same can be said for my decision to save this fun, River Island, Asos dress for special occasions. The bold floral pattern effuses a little too much stimulation for my everyday threshold.
