If you are reading this post now, you may not be a last-minute Halloween planner. Halloween may be something you’ve been strategizing for all summer (Bravo!). In my experience, the holiday has a way of sneaking up on you, right past those pumpkin spice lattes and onto your doorstep… “trick or treat!”
So, what will your dog wear for Halloween? According to my Instagram poll, eighty percent of people were interested in Halloween costumes for dogs as opposed to themselves. Kevin, my artist assistant, and mini-goldendoodle, happily volunteered to model last-minute dog costume ideas for you!
In this post, you’ll find a mix of quick DIY dog costumes and Amazon finds. First, we will start with how to make your own TY Beanie Baby Costume for dogs.
How to Make a TY Beanie Baby Costume for Dogs
Only a few supplies are needed to make a TY Beanie Baby Costume for your dog. You can find them all at Michael’s or your local craft store.
Materials
- Red Felt
- White Felt ( with adhesive back)
- Hot glue (optional)
- Scissors
- String
- Paper
- Pen or Marker
Step 1
Draw a heart shape on paper. This can be whatever paper you have lying around your house: construction paper, printer paper, sketchbook paper, etc. Cut a paper heart and use it to trace the heart shape on the red felt. Cut along your pen marks to reveal a heart shape out of red felt.
Step 2
Study the “TY” symbol for Beanie Baby and draw the “T” and “Y” on paper. Try to mimic the look of the “T” and the “Y” according to the Beanie Baby font. If this intimidates you, try printing the “TY” image out and copy it with tracing paper. Trace the “T” and the “Y” on your white felt. Cut the white felt to reveal your letters.
Note: If you bought the white felt with the adhesive back, make sure to trace the “T” and the “Y” felt side up.
Step 3
Remove the sticky back and place the letters on your felt heart. If your white felt does not have sticky backing, use hot glue to adhere the white letters to your red felt. Lastly, use scissors to cut a small hole in the top left corner of your TY Beanie Baby Tag. Take a piece of string and loop it through the hole to attach the “TY” tag to your dog’s collar.
You can also order a key chain hook if you are wanting something more secure.
Note: When cutting the shape of your heart, consider the size of your dog. I may have made Kevin’s Beanie Baby tag a little too big but he hasn’t complained!
Kevin is one of the sweetest dogs I know! He has a desire to please but is at the peak of his puppy energy at 10 months old. To keep your dog from chewing the TY Beanie Baby Costume, make the heart smaller and pull tight to the collar. That seemed to keep Kevin from playing with the costume.
Rooster Halloween Costume for Dogs
I must admit, Kevin looks pretty hilarious in a Rooster Costume. He doesn’t bark much unless he’s out on the porch or on a car ride. His bark sounds very similar to that of a Rooster’s crow, particularly when his voice cracks! So, I found this Rooster Costume on Amazon Prime for Halloween and Kevin approved it. Perhaps he missed his calling?
