Creating Costume Concept Art (say that three times fast!) is a fun design challenge. Start by asking yourself to create a dress with newspaper, balloons or no fabric at all! What materials look like ruffles or feel like bubble wrap? You will surprise yourself with what you come up with! This dress was the most fun and easy to create! I ordered a blue tube top dress on Amazon (because where else!?) and found the blue spotted balloons on sale at Michaels.
MORE IS MORE AND LESS IS A BORE

I’ve never considered myself to be a Costume Artist but perhaps I’ve opened a new door? This balloon dress design was inspired by Fourth of July 2021…I can see a bold woman wearing this, strutting in a mask-less parade, ready to re-enter the social scene in style.
How To Create Costume Concept Art:
Looking to re-create this Balloon Dress look? Its super easy and quick! Take your balloons and safety pin them where you want, placing them in close proximity to create a full look. Once you place enough balloons you won’t be able to see the safety pins!
The balloons will create movement comparable to fabric. Make sure the balloons are the same size and when it comes to color, keep it simple! My rule of thumb is, if you are going to use all the colors in the world, make it look intentional!
Lastly, instead of using safety pins, you could always hand sew the balloons on as a second option. In my case, I was a little pressed for time to execute this idea before it consumed me! Anyone else know the feeling?
Supplies:
- 20 Safety Pins
- Spotted Balloons ( I found mine on sale at Michaels, there were several other patterned balloons to chose from that would make excellent costume art!)
- Tube Dress
- Total time: 20 minutes
I’m thinking I might like this on me with the balloons deflated! You are so fun with fashion!
Hi Randy! Balloons deflated, now I like that idea!
