The holidays are coming so it’s time to get crafty with a therapeutic activity for all to enjoy. Whether you are hosting a Friendsgiving or a family of 4, this project can involve everyone at your dinner table.
All you need is a pumpkin and a Sharpie marker! Read on as I share different ways to incorporate this Thankful Pumpkin Activity into your Thanksgiving traditions.
Therapeutic Pumpkin Activity
One of the best coping mechanisms in life is to remember what you are grateful for. As a former Art Therapist, I call this activity therapeutic because it invites us to reflect on the one thing we are most grateful for.
The instructions are simple:
- Ask your family and friends to think of one thing they are most grateful for this season.
- Have them write it on the pumpkin using a black permanent marker.
- If you have fewer guests, invite them to write 2-3 things they are thankful for.
5 Ways to Use This Therapeutic Activity with Friends
- Use the pumpkin as a guest book. When your friends and family arrive for the big feast, have them sign their names and write what they are most grateful for.
- When the pumpkin is fully covered in words of gratitude, read it aloud to your guests as dinner entertainment!
- No need to wait for Thanksgiving day! Have your family add words of gratitude all November long.
- Use 3 pumpkins and assign a theme to each. The first could be relationships you are thankful for. The second could surround places you are thankful for and the third; things you are grateful for.
- Use the pumpkin as a Thanksgiving centerpiece on your table.
Mix it up and have fun with it! Any other ideas on how to incorporate the Thankful Pumpkin into your Thanksgiving festivities?
