Are you searching for how to be creative in life and work but feel stuck? It happens to everyone, no matter if you’re in the secular or creative field. So, how do you get unstuck?
In this post I have created 5 tips on how to be creative so get ready to dive deeper into your creative self.
1. Rest.
” I know how to take naps, is that what you mean?”
Reaching your best creative self requires you to rest your mind and slow the pace of your day. So no, I’m not referring to taking naps. Although, nap away if that’s your thing! I’m referring to letting your mind wander as opposed to training it to move on to the next chore, errand or to-do list.
- Take a morning or evening walk, daily
- Create a morning ritual of coffee and quiet time before you start your day
- Exercise. Let your body take over and relax your brain
Creating Ritual Is Key.
2. Prioritize
In order to reach your best creative self you need to prioritize activities that make you feel alive! To identify these activities ask yourself: when do I experience the least amount of anxiety? What am I doing and who is around me?
Replicate those situations weekly to maximize your sense of fulfillment and confidence.
3. Explore
Ugh. Yes, this means you may have to do something outside your comfort zone. People always ask me how to be creative and I always advise them to EXPLORE! Meaning, do one or two things a month that are outside your comfort zone.
Comfort zone?
I’m not talking about climbing Mount Everest. Don’t worry! Lets think small.
- Use a different route home after work one day, try the new coffee shop that opened up around the corner or ask the barista making your coffee how his or her day is going.
What does that have to do with being creative?Opening yourself up to new stimuli can help the plasticity of your brain. Enriching your environment can have positive effects on your brain’s ability to adapt…and yes, be creative!
Art making is absolutely on the list of activities to encourage neuroplasticity as well, particularly as we age.

4. Embrace
Next, reaching your best creative self requires the ability to embrace new circumstances and challenges with a level of understanding that change is the only constant in life. Lets embrace it!
There is a Buddhist principle of impermanence that states: even a flower must die.
5. Observe
Lastly, learn to be creative through observation. When we are depressed, we tend to look inward. It can be difficult to “get outside of ourselves.” Reminding yourself to notice your environment will help you maintain perspective, clarity, and creativity in your life.
